Who Are We?

Yellowwood Youth is a nonprofit organization (although we are not a registered 501c3) homed in Bloomington, Indiana. Founded and led by youth, we strive to provide quality education, resources, and opportunities to young people in Indiana in relation to the environment and the climate.

Our Story

Yellowwood Youth began as a Climate Action Project for Project Green Challenge, an international environmental education challenge hosted by Turning Green , in October 2019.

Project Green Challenge finalists worked with mentors to structure their projects. Founder Josie Sparks worked with Beth Rattner and Nicola Salzman to develop a mission for the organization and steps to achieve its goals.

Since then...

Since our beginning, we have led 4 projects. The Shoe Strike, the Podcast, the E-book, and most recently, the plastic bag-mat project

  • The Shoe Strike - 836 shoes were donated to those in need around Southern Indiana.

  • The Podcast - Our founder interviews leaders of environmental organizations.

  • The E-book - Art and Writing submissions from youth elementary-high school.

  • The Mat Project - Plastic bags repurposed as mats for those experiencing homelessness.
